Multiple continents, multiple experiences

What an amazing day! But, before I tell you about it, I was chided by my traveling companions for not mentioning the fact that we were all daring enough to eat sheep's brain Thursday night ( apologies to Becky, Jamie and any other vegetarian/vegan readers!)

Today found us awakening in Canakkale and catching the ferry back to the European continent as we visited the Gallipoli Peninsula, site of the famed WWI battlefront that claimed more than 100,000 soldiers! It was incredibly moving and repeatedly lead each of us to wonder "what for?" as we ponder the futility and brutality of war. The honoring and cherishing of the dead, from both sides of the campaign was heart-warming and heart-wrenching at the same time! Below the first picture honors fallen Allies while the second and third fallen Turks.

Crossing back to Asia, as we made our way to Troy, we decided to stop at what appeared to be a simple Mom and Pop diner on the route. Hidden from the road was the panoramic view of the Aegean we discovered on being directed to their outdoor dining area behind the restaurant, and invisible from the street. We had a wonderful kabob lunch while soaking in the breath-taking beauty!

After a great meal, enriched by laughter, we drove on to the site of the excavation of the ancient city of Troy, visiting ruins almost 5000 years old!

A harrowing, steep, very narrow drive later, we landed in the incredibly beautiful city of Assos. It's a coastal town and, as do many of these older cities, it has very narrow, cobblestone roads. These two pics show the view from our hotel room:

Here's a shot of the Grand assos Hotel:

We had a three-hour long dinner sitting next to the water. It has been so delightful to share these long, seaside meals full of good food, laughter and rich in friendship. As we headed to bed around midnight the city was still very much alive! We feel asleep anticipating a morning swim in the Aegean!
