We hung out at the water a couple of hours before packing up and heading out on the treacherous return trip out of Assos. On our way out, we stopped at the ruins of the Temple of Helen. It required a steep, 400 yard climb up cobblestone steps in 90 degrees, but fortunately the path was lined with charming villagers selling their homemade wares. It was from this site that Aristotle would lecture, having married a woman from Assos. Plato also Taught in Assos.
A couple of hours and shopping stops later, we ate lunch in one of the local restaurants where our charming hostess served us her homemade Turkish ravioli covered in a mint, garlic and lemon yogurt sauce. She had the most beautiful smile.
After a couple more hours of driving, we arrived in our stop for the night, the Cunda island neighborhood of Ayvalik. Again, there's a busy street scene! We ate al fresco, mostly a large selection of appetizers. One, which we all loved, was stuffed zucchini blossoms--stuffed with rice, currants and pine nuts. Less pleasurable to a couple of us were a food we named "fish balls," made of pressed fish meat, shaped into a ball and then battered and fried. We ended with Turkey's equivalent of a donut hole, only better!!
Oya is fighting a cold. We hope she wins quicky! Tomorrow we head to Ephesus!
